Spotify Will Launch A Browser-Based Version

If you’re wondering why the Spotify desktop software has hardly been updated in a year, it’s because the company is preparing to launch a completely overhauled browser-based version of its streaming music service, multiple sources confirm. Along with moving to the web, the redesign will focus more on discovery, including following the listening habits and playlists of influencers in addition to your friends.

One source even said a lower subscription price for its mobile app could be in the works. With a healthy user base and the record labels’ support, the browser version could help Spotify continue dominating the streaming music spotlight.

SPOTIFY TURNS IT UP

Despite some thinking its current design is inferior to competitor Rdio, Spotify has had a blockbuster year since its U.S. launch a year ago. It came out swinging when Facebook unveiled the Open Graph platform at the f8 conference. One of the first active Open Graph apps, it immediately flooded Facebook’s new Ticker feed with stories about what friends were listening to on Spotify. It took Rdio a few days to get up and running, so even though it was already browser-based, Spotify had already begun to snowball.

Click-throughs led to signups and in just six weeks, Spotify shot up from 1.33 million to 2.4 million daily users, and from 3.98 million to 7.4 million million monthly users according to AppData. Now it’s at a whopping 7.7 million dailies and 22.2 million monthlies, and 4 million of them pay $5 a month for ad-free service or $10 for zero ads and mobile access.

MICROSOFT Corp has announced the general availability of Windows Server 2012, the latest version of its server operating system (OS), which it described in a statement as the cornerstone of a cloud OS.

 

“The operating system has always been the heartbeat of IT and [it] is now undergoing a renaissance in the new world of continuous cloud services, connected devices and big data,” said Satya Nadella, president of Microsoft Server and Tools Business

 

“Microsoft’s unique legacy in the most widely used operating systems, applications and cloud services positions us to deliver the Cloud OS, based on Windows Server and Windows Azure, helping customers achieve a data center without boundaries,” he said at the global online launch event (pic).

 

Microsoft said it built Windows Server 2012 “from the cloud up,” applying its experience operating global data centers that rely on hundreds of thousands of servers to deliver more than 200 cloud services.

 

Windows Server 2012 adds new advancements in virtualization, storage, networking and automation. Hundreds of new features can help customers achieve a transformational leap in the speed, scale and power of their data centers and applications, the company claimed.

 

In combination with Windows Azure and System Center, Windows Server 2012 empowers customers to manage and deliver applications and services across private, hosted and public clouds.

 

Businesses and organizations of all sizes throughout the Asia Pacific region have started using Windows Server 2012, including Mitra Solusi Telematika in Indonesia; Mydin in Malaysia; AWAN Computing in Singapore; Phayao University in Thailand and Asia Commercial Bank and Vietnam National University in Vietnam.

What does a government or cybercommand do when it has 2 billion more potential targets to shoot at and defend against in a period of four years?

More than 20 years ago a number of us were warning allied governments and defense organizations about a number of key developments.

Class I Information Warfare: The loss of privacy and Identity Theft Class II: Private espionage and organized cybercrime Class III: Nation-state, NGO and terrorist use of Internet technologies as offensive weapons. We were ignored. Defense groups said, “if it doesn’t explode, it’s not ours,” and Congress said, “why would a criminal or terrorist ever want to use the Internet…?”

Now we know. And here it comes again.

The smart phone is just a computer. It’s highly mobile, it’s prolific and it’s growing in power. The ITA estimates that in 2014, 4.2 billion IP endpoints will populate the Earth.

Governments will face two distinct sets of problems due to the coming onslaught

Should we allow the use and integration of devices that present tremendous security problems? We are going to have to defend against an additional 2 billion intelligent endpoints that will have similar attack capabilities to conventional fixed computers. Thus, CND of not only state-managed assets, but of critical infrastructures, will become a greater challenge than ever before.

CNA operations will find a much larger target suite, if they can in fact identify bad actors with high degrees of certainty.

Both are indeed daunting technical hurdles that, as usual, favor the bad actors.

State approves Facebook’s plan to issue stock for Instagram purchase

The state of California today approved Facebook’s plan to acquire Instagram for $300 million in cash and 23 million shares of its stock. This brings the deal, which was announced in April, closer to closing. Instagram shareholders still have to vote to formally approve the sale.

This morning lawyers and employees from Facebook and Instagram attended a “fairness hearing” before the California Department of Corporations. Facebook called for the hearing as a way to obtain exemption from federal registration and speed up the acquisition process. Without a state-level fairness hearing, it can take more than six months and over $250,000 to register a securities offering, according to the California Department of Corporations website. California is one of six states in the U.S. that allow this quicker and more cost-effective review.

Since the time Facebook announced its intent to buy Instagram, its shares have lost significant value on the public market. The formerly $1-billion deal is now worth close to $750 million at Facebook’s $19.10 share price as of today at 1 p.m. PT. The LA Times reports that co-founder and CEO Kevin Systrom says he recognized the risk of Facebook losing value and was negotiating on the basis of cash and stock options, not the end valuation. He says the media played up the $1-billion valuation, but he believes Instagram’s 19 shareholders will still vote in favor of the deal.

“We still believe firmly in the long-term value of Facebook,” he said.

Systrom also revealed that although he had been approached by other companies looking to buy Instagram, no formal offers had been made.

Last week, the Federal Trade Commission closed its investigation of the acquisition without taking any action, allow the deal to proceed. Instagram has gained more than 50 million new users in the four and a half months since Facebook announced its plans to acquire the mobile photo-sharing network.

But the industry is still sorting out who will be the long term winners and losers in the smartphone world.

Google may suffer as it supplies the Android operating system for Samsung phones. That means it could lose out if Apple manages to get permanent bans on the sale of some Samsung handsets.

A decision on that is due from the court next week.

Partially blocking Samsung from the US market could dramatically change the league table where the South Koreans dominate with 32.6 percent of all smartphone sales worldwide between April and June. Apple had 16.9 percent, Nokia 6.6 percent, Taiwan's HTC 5.7 percent and China's ZTE had 5.5 percent.

Investors obviously think Nokia could be a winner from Samsung's setback.

The Finnish firm's shares shot up on Monday. Its newest smartphones use a Microsoft operating system, which Apple has no problems with.

Other handset makers will now be worrying whether they will be next on Apple's litigation list and how much this case will change the dynamics of the highly competitive mobile phone industry.

The US military has been conducting cyber-attacks against its perceived opponents in Afghanistan, according to one of its generals.

Marine Corps Lieutenant General Richard Mills made the unusually explicit acknowledgment at a conference in Baltimore last week, The Associated Press reported on Friday.

Mills was in command of US-led foreign forces in southwestern Afghanistan between 2010 and 2011.

At the conference, he explained how US commanders regard cyber weapons as an important part of their arsenal.

“I can tell you that as a commander in Afghanistan in the year 2010, I was able to use my cyber operations against my adversary with great impact,” he said.

“I was able to get inside his nets, infect his command-and-control, and in fact defend myself against his almost constant incursions to get inside my wire, to affect my operations,” he added.

There’s been no immediate comment so far from the Pentagon on Mills' speech.

The US has been accused of conducting cyber warfare in many countries in the Middle East and North Africa.

A recent book by New York Times reporter David Sanger recounts how US President Barack Obama ordered a wave of electronic incursions to sabotage Iran's nuclear energy program.

The US-led war in Afghanistan began in 2001. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but insecurity continues to rise across the country, despite the presence of about 130,000 of US-led troops.
